What is inclusion and how can the student benefit from it?
A
Inclusion is the generally accepted concept that students with disabilities attend classes with their general education peers with direct support from special educators. Research cites that students with disabilities:
*facilitate more appropriate social
behavior because of higher expecta-
tions in the general education class-
room
*promote level of achievement higher
or at least as high as those achieved
in self-contained classrooms
*offer a wide circle of support, including
social support from classmates without
disabilities
*improve the ability of students and
teachers to adapt to different teaching
and learning styles
General education students also benefit from inclusion:
*offer the advantage of having an extra
teacher or aide to help them with the
development of their own skills
*lead to greater acceptance of students
with disabilities
*facilitate understanding that students
with disabilities are not always easily
to identified
*promote better understanding of the
similiarities among students with and
without disabilities
Will my child be responsible for the same content as other students?
A
Yes, they are, but it may be presented in a different format. As stated in the student's individual education plan (IEP) there may be
accomodations/modifications made to help them achieve academic success.
Every three weeks progress reports are sent home and every six weeks report cards. In addtion to this, progress reports which address goals on the IEP are sent home at the end of each six weeks.
