Welcome to the newest part of the BCMS library - blogging! I am going to be posting blogs about books I am reading that will be avaliable for checkout at the middle school library. I will be reading books that are nominated for the KY Bluegrass Award in the beginning -but who knows where this will take us. I invite you to post comments and ask me questions about the books I've posted. Keep in mind that I will be monitoring/approving the blogs - and absolutely NO objectional or offensive information will be posted! You can blog anonymously or you may put first names, but please do not put first and last names for security reasons. If you would like me to post a new blog about a book you are reading so others can ask you quesitons about it - please give me the information at middle school or e-mail it to me. I will post your information for others to read and respond to. I am excited about the new format that we can use to communicate with each other about books and reading. Let the blogging begin ! ! ! I am beginning this blog for Ms. Conley's 8th grade classes who are reading this book. I remember reading this book for a graduate class many years ago. At the time is was newly published and caused some controversy, but I enjoyed the book at the time. I like books that make me think. This book definately makes one think about how society sees things that it does not deem "perfect". My question is could the world ever be 'Perfect"?" |
I really like this book because it describes to you how their society is perfect. not every society is perfect. After Jonas is selected "Reciever of Memory," is told a lot of new things he is allowed to do. One of the biggest, most important rule was that he was allowed lie. Now if that was I wouldn't like that job to be selected for me because, I would feel that i would be left out from everybody else, because I would be allowed to lie. It would be very hard for me to learn this new rule because their entire lives they were taught not to lie!! I just think this book makes you think and it teaches you about what other societys do. So you need to read this book! |
If you have read "The City of Ember" then you will be able to relate to the "giver". In the "Giver", Jonas, one of the main characters, is able to see things "change". Although I will not tell you what he sees exactly, I can tell you that if you want to find out, then go check it out right now. |
I was quite hesitant about reading this book the first time I ever read it. Science fiction is not a genre that I usually enjoy, but this book is definitely one of my most favorite young adult fiction novels. It really made me consider the balance between security and freedom. Jonas' community was created to protect its citizens from their own mistakes...their own wrong choices. In order to achieve this "utopia", citizens gave up freedom of choice generations ago. It's difficult for me to imagine living in a place where I couldn't choose anything on my own even if it was for my own protection. How ironic that "utopia" means "no place"--it makes me wonder if a perfect society is ever possible. And, even if perfection and security is what I was guaranteed, would it be worth giving up my own free will? Is that a price you would be willing to pay? |
The giver i think is a really odd book cuz the way everything has to be perfect so first of all i dont think everything should or even would ever be so perfect so and i also dont like how there jobs are so unimportant like birth mother there wouldn be any lil babies to hand out every year so the people can have a new child in there home but the way they do it is so dumb cuz the birthmothers have to have 3 babies then they have to be laborers after there three years are over i think they should be more valued |
this boook is awesome because it is climate control....... ummm you dont see color.....and idont know |
I think the giver is a graet book. It is about a boy named jones. He lives in this perfict wourld where everthing is black and white. Every dec. is your birthday.and when you turn 12 you have a job that is asinged to you and you have to do it for the rest of your life. He gets the reciver of memorre. They tell him it well be full of pane but if you wont to find out more read the book the giver. |
The Giver i thought was a good book because it is different from all the ones i have read. Because the whole community is diferent they see in black and white, they only allowed to have a mom dad brother and a sister, also they have certain jobs they get assigned when there tweleve and jonas is assigned the reciever of memories. That is supposed to be a great honor because this one person holdes memories that no one else in the communities noes about beacause they dont want the community to be able to fill the pain that is beyond that community. But at the same time it could be a burdon because it weakens you and your alone through your whole life. That was some of my things i liked the best in the book Giver. |
The giver i though it was going to be very boring.. but acutally its has been a great book. even though i think its kinda weird that they wash old people but i also think it would be kinda cool to be in an communtiy were you cant see color or what peoples hair color but i also think its kinda bad because you dont even now what the color red is ... But jonas is getting to feel pain unlike the other people in his community they cant feel pain, they have medience every time they hurt thereself. I think this is a great book that other people should read ! |
The Giver i thought it was going to be a boring but it rurns out that it it a pretty good book. The Giver for me is really good!! The Giver is the best book Ive read all this year even though we are reading it as a class!! The book its really different. The community is different because there not aloud to pick their own spouses, children, brothers and sisters. There also not aloud to pick there the homes that they live in and there jobs. They have ceremonies for like their birthdays if you call it that but they are assigned a job when they turn 12. So there community is really different to me and probably to the rest of the students. The book to me is kinda sad because Jonas the main character in The Giver because when he gets his job assignment he has to go through all of this pain. When you turn 12 thats the last ceremony that you will have. Its like a birthday. But its like a big ceremony!!!!!!! But over all The Giver is an EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!!!! So dont check this book out in the Library wait and read it with Mrs.Conley in the 8th grade, she makes it really interesting. Like i said the Giver is trhe best book that I have read all year so far. Jonas got "selected" as the "Reciever Of Memory". Witch he didnt get to choose that job someone chose it for hi,. So just make sure you read the GIVER somehow or another. So READ THE GIVER!!!!! Thanks. |
I think The Giver is an excellent book! At first I didnt think I was going to like it but I really do. It's about a boy named Jonas who lives in a "perfect society." But a perfect society really doesnt exist. In his community they dont see color, and they are grouped in ages like The Ones or The Twos. No matter what day or moth you were born, you are grouped with people who were born in that same year. The people in the community dont get to choose their spouses, kids, jobs, or anything. Some of the stuff that occurs in the community is really... odd! But, when Jonas, the main character, turns twelve, he gets "selected" to be The Reciever of Memory. He gets to find out and experience what has happened in the past. For example, seeing color, or riding a sled down a hill of snow, or even getting sunburnt. A man called "The Giver" gives all of those memories to Jonas. When he gives Jonas the memories, The Giver looses the memories. We have'nt finished the book yet but I cannot wait until we do because its a really good book! I recommend it to EVERYONE!!! Even if your not into the whole science-fiction type books, its great! So, READ IT!!! Thanks! |
(Yeah, your right you all. There is no such thing as a "perfect society" and never will be. No matter how much anyone wants to have one, it's just not possible. ) |
i really like the giver in fact i have already read th hwole book twice in class i just could not stand reading with the class so i read on |
The giver was very wierd today becuase when a birthmother has twins they keep the baby that ways more and then they kill the lighter one that is so wierd because why would they do it and the people who "release" the baby dont know that they are killing it they just think they go to a better place and whatever. That would not be a community that i would want to live in especially when it came time to be released. |
At first i didnt think that the giver would be a very good book, but I really enjoy reading it. I like it because you get to see what a perfect community would be like. The only part of the book that I didnt like was the part when you find out what release really is. Other than that I really enjoyed the book: the giver. |
Uhm..I love the Harry Potter books..I wish there were more..There really long, but worth it. I read all of them in like a week, because I couldn't put them down. |
This is kind of a weird book at first. But it really helps you to understand the ending if you read the next 2 books. They really clear things up and let you know what happens next. |
We just finished the Giver and i was extremely upset the way that it ended. I did not like the ending because it pretty much drops off and leaves you wandering if Jonas, and Gabe really get to "elsewhere" or not, the only thing thats good about that is that you really get to decide the ending of the book. |
At the beginning of the giver it was kind of boring and it confused me a little bit. But then it turned out to be a really really cool, a little disturbing, and interesting book. One part that i liked the most throughout the book was when Jonas ran away and took Gabriel and they had got to see all the different seasons and had got to see the different animals that were in the book and the different foods they had got to eat. One part i didnt like in the book was the part when his dad killed (released) the twin baby. But overall it was a great book!! |
Well we finally finished the book!!! It was really good but it just kinda left us hanging at the end of the book. We were like come on the book is the bomb!!!!!
Now were going to see the first ever Giver PLAY it will be good but maybe not as good as the book!!!! So ill let you know!!!! |
How long did it take to realize what released meant in the book? Did you know right away, or was it something the author let you find out? I have read the book, but it was been quite some time. I think it would make the story more interesting if the author let you find out on your own. |
Jaden,
Which book would you recommend most - The Giver or Diamonds in the Shadow? |
Mrs. Cummins, It took me a while to figure out what released meant. It was until we read how Jonas' father "released" a baby! So, yea. |
The giver was a very good book from begining to end it had u wondering wat was goin to happen next it kept u on the edge of ur seat the whole time from the point where Jonas dad had killed the baby to the very end where they escape |
it was a very good book! not as i expected it to be! |
